Growing frustrated with their highly partitioned living spaces, the clients called on us to create a more open floor plan with more expansive views of the surrounding landscape. Working closely with our structural engineer, we designed the living spaces to have a more loft-like feel. Additionally, we updated the kitchen to take full advantage of the newly generated connectivity within the main floor of the house.

Ellsworth Air Force Base commissioned five pieces of wall art to be featured in a new facility on the base. The art depicted the Breguet-14 in World War I, the B-18 & B-23 in the run-up to World War II, and the B-25 & B-26 in World War II. Each wall included a top band of information with the conflict theater or home station, the squadron, and the aircraft designation and nickname. The main body of the art featured historic maps and large-scale photographs.

For years, the clients have been planning on updating the interiors of their 1970s bright and spacious home. The clients asked us to renovate the existing spaces to emphasize the mid-century feel, while also adding a new master suite, a two-car garage, and a guesthouse. The new master suite will be located at the edge of a dramatic canyon, the site’s key feature. The complete exterior recladding, as well as the additions will feature a contemporary design vocabulary.

The lake front pavilion is a great addition to the current amenities found at the Sheridan Lake Marina. It offers a seasonal kitchen, dining area and shelter. We designed the structure, alongside the structural engineer, for ease of construction and maintenance. All materials needed to be no-fuss and easy to maintain, but also needed to meet US Forest Service requirements. The result is an open structure with an irregular gable roof that sits lower in the back to provide shelter to the service area, and higher in the front to open up the expansive view to the lake and Black Hills.

For the M Residence, a dovetail-corner log home, we were asked to design a sunroom addition to attach to the southeast side. The interiors of the residence are dark, and the clients wanted to bring in some of the great natural light that the house receives and to relocate the existing fireplace. For the addition, we designed a 300 SF sitting room that extends out of the dining and living room area. The addition reuses the existing sliding doors located at the east of the house, and plans to reuse as much of the material removed during construction as possible. Part of the intent with the addition was to mimic the simple yet playful roof form that the house has, and to bring more natural light into the house.

The Vertex Sky Bar offers a luxurious social setting for hotel guests and local patrons. We are in the process of redesigning the exterior patio spaces to offer a similarly rich experience.

The mill was originally built by E. C. Lyle in 1894. It was unique in that it was used to shell corn, grind feed and sharpen sickles as wel as pump water. It now stands in disrepair and AcV2, along with the Grieve Family, are joining forces with the South Dakota Historic Preservation Office, in order to stop the damage that time and weather have caused. Our ultimate goal is to restore it back to working conditions and to have it serve as an educational facility.

Rapid City Garage patio before construction

The Rapid City Garage is significant to the commercial history of the area. Built in 1911 to be the first fireproof garage in the city, the building housed an early auto dealership, Canfield and Holcomb. The first floor has been recently remodeled into an upscale restaurant and bar, and future plans involve renovating the second floor into office space.

The patio has been designed to go well with the historic fabric of the building. A roof was attached to the single-story building façade, to provide a covered extension for the inside dining. The roof is made of exposed wood framing and corrugated metal panels with a rusted finish.

A self-standing bar was built to enhance the reuse of the building. It was constructed using split-faced block and a poured concrete countertop with wood columns to support an exposed wood frame and corrugated metal roof. This structure was detached from all other structures on the property, and is placed far back into the space as to minimize the effect it will have on the reading of the historic building.

A partial-height low wall was built using split-faced block on the north side of the patio. This wall provides enclosure for the exterior space as it borders the Main Street sidewalk.

Dakota Soda Company

Completed in late 2011, The Dakota Soda Company is a family-style restaurant, located within an exciting urban mall in the heart of Rapid City’s historic downtown district. Decades ago a department store, the newly restored building sits next to the recently completed Main Street Square. The Square is an urban hub that hosts events throughout the year, such as cultural festivals, concerts and ice-skating demonstrations, drawing in both locals and tourists.

The restaurant’s design takes inspiration from 1950s diners and incorporates bygone Americana artifacts, such as a restored stainless steel soda fountain. The menu features burgers and fries using ingredients sourced from local farms and ranches, as well as frozen custard and old-fashioned sodas.
